The Allure of Red Velvet Cake from Scratch

Ingredients
  

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • Cream cheese frosting for topping

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare the cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and cocoa powder together, then set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix together the sugar and vegetable oil until well combined.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, incorporating each fully before adding the next.
  5. Mix in the buttermilk, vanilla, and vinegar until combined; then incorporate the food coloring.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  10. Once cooled, frost with cream cheese frosting as desired.
